How to Move Safely During COVID-19

If you have an essential move during COVID-19, here’s how to do it.

Moving is, almost always, an essential activity. I had to move house during COVID-19, and I found it had its share of special challenges and difficulties. That’s why I wanted to share my top tips for getting through the process.

If you have to move and or store your items during this time, here are some tips to get you through it—and keep you organized (or watch my video below for a more detailed overview!).

1. Prepare!

A move is a great chance to clear out things you don’t need. You have to go through your stuff, so why not declutter? Use the move as a chance to declutter and donate what you no longer want to keep in your life. Pre-pack so you are ready on the day of the move.

2. No Contact

If you have symptoms of COVID-19, or are in a high-risk group, the safest process is to leave the pre-packed boxes with instructions for the movers.

3. Keep Clothes Clean

Use wardrobe boxes to store your clothes, so they stay protected during the move. A bonus is that you can keep them afterwards for use in your storage locker.

4. box IT Up Right

Facing up! If your boxes don’t have this designated slogan on them, use a marker or label to put an arrow or write “UP”. This helps the movers know how to carry them so they don’t get turned upside down during the move. Also, don’t forget to tape boxes shut. This helps keep your items in your boxes.

5. Label

Whether you make your own, or your moving companies use their own for inventory tracking, labeling is key to keeping everything smooth and organized.

6. Make A Plan

Have a plan, a schedule, and an idea of what you want where. Make sure you communicate your plan to your moving company, if you have one. I used Second Closet for my move.

6. Consider Storage

If you are moving into a smaller space, that’s ok! Instead of renting a large storage locker, hire a company that only charges you for what you store and can deliver it when you need it. Genius. Second Closet is my top choice for this.

My preferred moving company is Second Closet and they currently work in Vancouver, Ottawa and Toronto with new locations coming soon. They are exceptional at moving and also storing your items. Their amazing inventory system means you can access your items when you need them. They can even deliver them back to you!

6. Have Fun

Yes, it’s possible. Moving can be stressful, but try to have fun and enjoy it as a great time to get decluttered and re-organized!

Happy moving and stay safe during COVID-19.
